Hip Labral Repairs

HIP LABRAL REPAIRS

The labrum of the hip is a ring of connective tissue surrounding the socket of the hip joint. It acts to deepen and cushion the hip joint. It can be injured or torn due to trauma, repetitive movements, or structural abnormalities. Athletes who heavily use their hips in awkward motions (dance, soccer, football, golf) may be more prone to hip labrum injuries.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

If the labrum is torn, people often feel:

  • Clicking
  • Catching
  • Popping
  • Pain
  • Difficulty with motions of the hip, especially flexion and rotation

*Sometimes, a surgical repair is required to relieve symptoms*

HOW CAN PHYSICAL THERAPY HELP?

After surgery, PT works closely with your surgeon to return full range of motion, strength, and function according to a specific protocol. Interventions usually include soft tissue massage and other manual therapy, stretching, and various strengthening exercises.
