Lymphedema Management

The Lymphedema Management Program at Peak Physical Therapy is designed to help those diagnosed with lymphedema.

Lymphedema is a condition characterized by swelling specifically caused by a dysfunction of our lymphatic system. Most commonly, this occurs in the extremities and is caused by conditions such as post-surgical mastectomy, lumpectomy, or biopsy, post-surgical hysterectomy, infection, and other genetic causes.

At Peak Physical Therapy, our lymphedema management program focuses on reducing swelling and improving your mobility. Treatment is performed by a certified lymphedema therapist, who underwent extensive training in this area.

Treatment, known as complete decongestive therapy (CDT), includes the following:
  • Manual lymph drainage (MLD) which is a gentle form of massage designed to assist with drainage of lymphatic fluid
  • Compression wrapping with specialized bandages to further reduce swelling
  • Exercise to improve fitness without aggravation to the affected area
  • Education in self-care practices to best manage this condition long term
  • Education on proper compression garments/pumps for long term management
