Hip Replacements

HIP REPLACEMENTS

Hip replacements are a relatively common orthopedic procedure that are usually performed in older individuals when arthritis has caused joint breakdown and pain. There are multiple techniques a Surgeon may use to perform the hip replacement. Regardless of the technique used, it is imperative that patients begin Physical Therapy as soon as possible to help ensure proper recovery. There are sometimes precautions after surgery that limit certain motions. This helps ensure proper healing and integrity of the replacement. Your Physical Therapist will help with these precautions and other post-operative protocols.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

  • Stiffness
  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Decreased strength
  • Difficulty with weight bearing tasks

HOW CAN PHYSICAL THERAPY HELP?

PT helps by working with your Surgeon to ensure any precautions and/or protocols are followed. Gradual increases in range of motion, strength and function are achieved through use of manual therapy, stretching and strengthening. Proper use and/or weaning off an assistive device such as a cane or walker is also a part of Physical Therapy.
