Neck Pain

There are many causes of neck pain, many of which can improve with physical therapy care. Some causes of neck pain include arthritis causing degeneration, muscle strains, inflammation of the joints, ligament strains, whiplash, pinched nerves, poor posture, stress, and fractures. Whiplash can result from car accidents, sporting injuries, and falls.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

  • Pain in any area of the neck that may extend to the head, shoulder, or upper back near the shoulder blades
  • Facial pain
  • Headaches
  • Tingling or numbness down into your arm or hand and fingers

HOW CAN PHYSICAL THERAPY HELP?

Based on the initial examination, your physical therapist will determine the cause of your pain and provide appropriate treatment that may include soft tissue manipulation and stretching to reduce muscle tension and restore range of motion, treatment to address abnormal joint mobility and mechanics, postural strengthening, and treatment to address abnormal body mechanics and ergonomics to prevent further injury. Your therapist will provide you with an appropriate home exercise program to ensure maximum recovery.
