Shin Splints

Shin splits, also known as medial tibial stress syndrome, is inflammation of the muscles in the lower leg. It is a result of repetitive loading with jumping and running activities so is common among athletes. It is often a sign of poor or over training, biomechanical abnormalities of the foot, and inadequate footwear. Muscle imbalance including weakness and poor flexibility are often contributing factors to shin splints.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

Vague lower leg pain that increases with the beginning of movement and initial foot contact that improves with continued activity but returns with a cool-down or rest
