Fractures

Fractures can occur in any bone of the body and can be caused by repetitive stress, trauma such as a fall, and can also be associated with conditions such as Osteoporosis that weaken the bones. When bones are broken, immobilization in a cast, brace, or other supportive device such as a sling is common.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

  • Pain in affected area (decreases as healing occurs)
  • Stiffness
  • Decrease in range of motion
  • Decrease in strength

HOW CAN PHYSICAL THERAPY HELP?

PT can help by gradually improving the range of motion of the affected area with techniques such as passive motion, stretching, and manual therapy. Once able, strengthening is also an important part of treatment.
