Little League Elbow

Little league elbow refers to a specific repetitive stress injury to the inside of the elbow. In this condition, repeated pulling of the forearm musculature during throwing causes irritation of a growth plate on the inner part of the elbow. This injury is called “little league elbow” because it is most common in children who are still growing. As athletes mature and growth plates close, injury to ligaments in this area is more likely than injuries of the growth plate itself.

Common causes include excessive throwing volume and poor volume management. Poor throwing mechanics, decreased strength, and decreased mobility can also be related.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Difficulty throwing and gripping objects

HOW CAN PHYSICAL THERAPY HELP?

PT helps by coordinating with coaches to properly manage throwing volume, decreasing pain, restoring range of motion, and improving strength. This improves force transfer during throwing and decreases the chance of re-injury.
