Bursitis

Bursas are fluid-filled sacs in the body that are present in areas of increased friction. For example, there are many bursas in the knee and shoulder to relieve friction where muscle tendons rub over bones, etc.

Bursitis is when the bursas themselves become inflamed. This is usually due to repetitive motions using the muscles around the inflamed area, leading to overuse, pain and inflammation.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Decreased joint mobility
  • Decreased strength
  • Muscle guarding

HOW CAN PHYSICAL THERAPY HELP?

PT can help by using manual therapy, gentle exercise and modalities to relieve pain, then working to ensure proper range of motion, strength and coordination of the affected body part to decrease the chance of exacerbating symptoms.
